Echo of my Heart

Two weeks by the sea when I was seventeen
A small white town, the bluest water I'd seen
I rode an old bike down the coastal road
Till I found a little bar where the music flowed

She worked behind the counter, freckles on her nose
Hair like fire, and sand between her toes
She poured me a soda and didn't ask my name
But she smiled like she knew that I'd come back again

She'd sing along with the radio on
Like the whole wide world was in that song
I'd sit at the bar, too shy to say "hello"
She's barefoot and laughing, putting on a show
The whole place watched her, a shining star
But she sang to me, like an echo of my heart

The last night we sat on the edge of the shore
She wrote her address, and she didn't say more
I wrote her all autumn, each letter came home
Return to sender, and I was alone

Maybe I read it wrong, maybe she wrote it fast
And twenty long years went quietly past
But in shops, in taxis, on a rainy night drive
That song would come on, and I'd feel alive

She'd sing along with the radio on
Like the whole wide world was in that song
I'd sit at the bar, too shy to say "hello"
She's barefoot and laughing, putting on a show
The whole place watched her, a shining star
But she sang to me, like an echo of my heart

Last Tuesday, it played on the radio
I stopped the car, and I knew I had to go
I booked a flight, and the taxi stopped by the sea
And from that old bar, our song was calling me

She'd sing along with the radio on
Like the whole wide world was in that song
I'd sit at the bar, too shy to say "hello"
She's barefoot and laughing, putting on a show
The whole place watched her, a shining star
But she sang to me, like an echo of my heart

She turned around, her hair still red
She smiled, like years had never fled
Two sodas, and the night rolled on
And this time, I was in the song
