Lullaby

The house is quiet, it's after two
The walls are listening like they do
That's when she comes, so soft and low
She sings a song that only I know
She sings the fears I hoped weren't true
And makes them sound like something new

She never shouts, she never fights
She just sings soft and dims my lights

She sings me one more lullaby
So sweet I never question why
She says I'll always fall behind
She wraps her song around my mind
She hums until my hope runs dry
And I fall asleep with this lullaby

I count the rain, I hum along
I try to cover up her song
But she just waits till all is still
Then finds the note that breaks my will
She knows my scars, she knows my wrongs
And turns them all to sing alongs

Tonight I begged her, "let me be"
She only sang more quietly

She sings me one more lullaby
The same old song, the same old lie
She knows the dreams I left behind
And plays them softly in my mind
No matter how I hide or try
I fall asleep with this lullaby

Then I heard her shake on a note
Like tears were caught inside her throat
And suddenly I could see
Her lullaby sounds just like me

Tonight I sing my own soft song
Out of key, but I sing along
I sing of days I made it through
Of all the good she never knew
Her old song fades, the night is mine
And I sing my own lullaby
