Perfect Song

I've started this a thousand times
With half a line, a crooked rhyme
But nothing ever feels like you
The way you smile, the things you do
The page just stares and waits again
Like it knows I'll never quite explain

The melody just slips away
Each time I think I've found the way

I play the notes, erase the lines
Rewrite the verse a hundred times
I'm searching for a way to say
What words just let slip away
But maybe one day you'll sing along
To the mess I made into a song

I keep my notebook by the bed
For dreams I lose the moment fled
And sometimes you're there in the haze
A verse that fades before I wake
I sing to shadows on the wall
But none of them sound right at all

The melody just slips away
Each time I think I've found the way

I play the notes, erase the lines
Rewrite the verse a hundred times
I'm searching for a way to say
What words just let slip away
But maybe one day you'll sing along
To the mess I made into a song

Maybe one day, when you're near
And I can say it all sincere
I'll hum a chord and you'll just know
That every word was always yours

I play the notes, erase the lines
Rewrite the verse a hundred times
Still reaching for that perfect tone
To make your heart feel less alone
But this might be my perfect song
Even if you never sing along
