The Kingdom We Forgot

We built a castle out of words
And filled the halls with songs unheard
Our vows were stitched in silver thread
On paper stars above our bed
We crowned each other king and queen
Of places only we had seen
But dreams can't hold when time won't stop
And so we lost
The kingdom we forgot

I still walk those fields in sleep
Where secrets bloom, and shadows keep

There was a throne made out of light
A gate we closed to stay upright
You held my hand like it was law
And called me yours without a flaw
But we grew tired, we closed the gate
We packed our things, then called it fate
Now all that's left are echoes caught
In the halls
Of the kingdom we forgot

The garden once was wild and free
Now brambles guard what's left of me
You left your ring upon the stair
I kept it there, I leave it there
Our tapestries have turned to dust
But still they whisper what we trust
No war, no fire, no tragic plot
Just silence in
The kingdom we forgot

I say your name and hear the sound
Of pages closing underground

There was a throne made out of light
A window watching stars at night
You sang to me like I was real
And I believed in what I'd feel
But love alone can't rule a land
When time begins to turn its hand
Now I just tend the ghost we wrought
In the ruins
Of the kingdom we forgot

What if we stayed, what if we tried?
What if the crown was just our pride?
Would we have saved what now is not
Or was it fate
The kingdom we forgot?

There was a throne, there was a flame
A promise carved into our name
We didn't fall, we didn't fight
We simply drifted out of sight
And now the sky won't spell us in
But still I feel you in the wind
A fairy tale the world won't spot
Only we
Recall the kingdom we forgot
